Rhodochrosite is often referred to as ‘Rosa del Inca’ as the Incas believed it was the blood of their ancestral rulers turned to stone. It is believed to have first been discovered in a part of ‘El Tahuantinsuyo’ [the Incan Empire] now modern day Argentina. One legend claims that deep beneath the Andes there is a Rhodochrosite heart shaped boulder that is believed to be the heart of Mother Earth. It is said to beat once every 200 years and the locals have protected and revered it for years.
